Brooks Run and variations

Run starts at Old US-27 and Roberts’ Mill Road.

You can come up Hwy 153, past Boy Scout Rd and look for the Old US-27 signs.  Or come up Corridor J/(New) US-27 to the Boy Scout Rd/Dayton Blvd Exit onto Old US-72.

Bob Boyer has meandered through a residential area south of there a couple of times, but that’s a fairly crowded area. I’d recommend Hwy-153 or Corridor J.

Turn West on Roberts’ Mill Rd, which leads through a small hamlet, past a church and elementry school and then starts up the mountain. Whee!

At the top of the mountain, turn LEFT onto SAWYER ROAD.

Take the 3rd RIGHT onto CORRAL ROAD.  Stay on Corral for a couple of miles

TURN RIGHT at T-intersection onto Taft Highway/US-127

There are some very intertaining downhill sweepers as you descend the mountain. One is

labelled “Dead Man’s Curve.”

At the bottom of the mountain, look for a small road on the left connecting US-127 with TN-283.

Take this half-left for a hundred yards or so and TURN LEFT onto TN-283)

(If you miss the little half-left, you’ll come to a bigger intersection and can make a hard left onto TN-283)

Follow TN-283/East Valley Road/Alvin York Highway south for several miles to POWELL’S CROSSROADS.  There are some houses along here, and some stretches where you can move a bit more briskly.  BE WATCHFUL.

At the stoplight, TURN LEFT onto TN-27/Suck Creek Road.  After about a half mile, this road becomes quite entertaining. There are a couple of hamlets on top of the mountain, then you have the downhill run, which is another treat.

Stay on TN-27/Suck Creek Road all the way to US-127 at the foot of Signal Mtn.

Turn RIGHT onto US-127 and follow it back to downtown Chattanooga or wherever you care to have a meal, coffee, or whatever.  We have stopped at The River Inn for a meal, but it has changed hands recently.  Might be worth a try again.  Nice parking lot is very photogenic for a group of Miatas.

Here ends the run.

Variation 1a:

Robert Mill to US 127 to left on TN 283 (East Valley Road) at bottom of Signal Mountain, proceed approximately 2 miles and turn right on Stone Cave Road. Cross over TN 28 at intersection, then left on Old Whitwell highway at deadend of Stone Cave.

1/2 mile (maybe), then right on Daus Mountain Road. Daus Mountain road to deadend at TN 399 (Fairview Road). There’s a local gas/country store at that intersection. Stay right on TN 399 until intersection with TN 111.

Right on TN 111 to come back down into Dunlap. Cross over US 127 and go up Mowbray Mountain to interchange at Lewis Chapel Road. Right on Lewis Chapel Road to intersect with Henson Gap Road. Veer left onto Henson Gap Road. At Y intersection, Henson Gap turns into either Poe Road (to the right) or Mowbray Pike (left). Veer left onto Mowbray Pike. Remain on Mowbray Pike to bottom of mountain in Soddy-Daisy.

Variation 1b:

Robert Mill to US 127 to left on TN 283 (East Valley Road) at bottom of Signal Mountain, proceed approximately 2 miles and turn right on Stone Cave Road. Cross over TN 28 at intersection, then left on Old Whitwell highway at deadend of Stone Cave.

1/2 mile (maybe), then right on Daus Mountain Road. Daus Mountain road to deadend at TN 399 (Fairview Road). There’s a local gas/country store at that intersection. Turn left on TN 399 (Fairview Road). TN 399 will intersect with TN 108, turn right on TN 108.

Proceed through Gruetli-Lager and stop light in the middle of nowhere. TN 108 will deadend at TN 50 (Pelham Road). Turn left. Go down TN 50 into Pelham. Turn left on old US 41 in Pelham and go up Monteagle Mountain on US 41. At top of mountain, old US 41 will deadend at US 41. Turn right and go into Sewanee. Lunch at Shenanigans (the leaning blue three story restuarant at the intersection of US 41 and University Avenue. Leaving Shenanigans, turn left to go back east on US 41, turn right on TN 156. At intersectrion, turn left to follow 156 around the end of the airport. Go down 156 into South Pittsburg. Left on TN 27/156 (S. Cedar Avenue), then right on TN 156 and cross over TN river. TN 156 back through Shellmound and across I-24 to dead end at US 41. Left on US 41 back across TN river, then right on TN 27 to Powell’s Crossroads. Right on TN 27 at stoplight intersection in Powell’s Crossroads. TN 27 over Suck Creek Mountain as in Brook’s run.
